The Benefits of Staying Active at Every Age

Our bodies benefit from movement at every age. Staying active helps us maintain mobility, build and use strength, support balance, and continue participating in the everyday activities we enjoy.

Being active doesn’t have to mean spending hours exercising. Movement happens throughout the day, from taking a walk and stretching, to standing up from a chair or joining an activity with others.

No matter the weather or your age, finding ways to keep moving has a multitude of benefits!

Find Opportunities to Move

There are countless ways to add more movement to your day. For residents in skilled nursing and senior living communities, movement can include:

  • Taking a short walk indoors or outdoors

  • Standing up and changing positions regularly

  • Stretching gently in the morning or after sitting for a while

  • Participating in activities that involve movement

  • Walking to visit with a friend or join someone for a stroll

Give Your Balance Some Attention

We rely on balance for many everyday movements, including walking, turning, getting dressed and moving from sitting to standing.

Simple habits can help make movement safer:

  • Take your time when changing positions

  • Keep pathways clear of clutter

  • Wear supportive, well-fitting footwear

  • Use handrails when available

  • Talk with a therapy professional about exercises that support balance

Safety comes first. Challenging balance exercises should be performed with appropriate support or supervision.

Keep Your Muscles Working

Strength is an important part of staying mobile and independent. Everyday movements give our muscles opportunities to work, whether we are standing from a chair, walking down the hallway or reaching for something.

One simple movement is the sit-to-stand.

Using a sturdy chair, practice standing up and sitting back down with slow, controlled movements. Hands or assistance can be used when needed. A therapy professional can help determine the right level of activity and support.

Movement Benefits Everyone

Being active doesn’t require a formal exercise program or a big commitment of time. Everyday movement gives your body opportunities to stay strong and mobile, whether you’re taking a walk, stretching, standing up from a chair or participating in an activity you enjoy.

Staying active can support mobility, flexibility, balance and independence, helping you continue taking part in the routines, hobbies and social activities that are part of everyday life. The benefits of movement extend across every stage of life, and there are always opportunities to find ways to move, no matter the weather.

At Concept Rehab, our therapists are proud to help each patient reach their full potential and make progress toward greater mobility and independence.
