Sister Jo and COTA during treatment

Sister Jo resides at one of our partner health centers. Before joining the center in 2021, she spent 40 years in Rosário, Brazil, dedicating her life to educating and supporting local communities through personal and cultural challenges.

Recently, Sr. Jo was diagnosed with Dementia. This was a hard adjustment for her as she felt she was losing her independence. She gave up driving, had to alter her routine and was presented with new difficulties that impacted her daily life. Sr. Jo began struggling to complete her IADL tasks such as laundry, bed making and housekeeping tasks within her environment due to her newly found deficits. Through Occupational Therapy with our Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), Alesha, she learned how to manage her deficits, how to utilize visual/written aids and compensatory strategies to complete her IADL tasks. With hard work, determination and a positive attitude, Sr Jo met her goals and is now able to complete her IADL tasks independently. She is thriving in her living environment and has been such a pleasure to work with. Her memory care specialist complimented her OT plan of care and was very pleased with her progress and independence.
